The old Slussen Lock in central Stockholm is being completely redeveloped to improve rail, water and road traffic flow and prepare the city for sea level rise and increased precipitation. One of the locks is being built on Refshaleøen in Copenhagen and will be towed all the way to Stockholm when completed.

In 1935 the lock was extensively covered by Lundborg’s and William-Olsson’s “four-leaf clover” concrete road structure, now dangerously eroded. Slussen will be rebuilt to become an effective and safe juncture for both pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

The current facility (built last century) was in such as bad state of disrepair that a decision was made to demolish and rebuild it from scratch at a cost of €1.2bn (£1bn).
